The FedEx 2027 rate increase averages 5.9% on U.S. list rates starting January 4, 2027. Small shippers will feel more than that. Ground parcels from 1 to 5 pounds rise about 6.5%, residential surcharges climb 40 cents, and new paper fees start January 18. Budget for a 7% to 8% jump on typical ecommerce parcels.
Every fall a carrier announces a "general rate increase," and every year the headline number hides the real one. The 2027 round is no different. The average looks moderate, but light residential parcels, the bread and butter of most online shops, take a bigger hit than the average suggests.
This guide is for owners and ops managers at small and mid-sized companies that ship parcels with FedEx, either on list rates or a modest discount. It breaks down which lines go up, works through one shop's numbers, and lists what to do before January. Fuel and the Postal Service are covered too, because they change the math.
What Is in the FedEx 2027 Rate Increase?
The FedEx 2027 rate increase raises standard U.S. package list rates by an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027. Minimum charges and many surcharges rise the same day. A second set of fees, aimed at paper shipping documents, follows on January 18. A separate change to some zone assignments is also scheduled for early 2027.
The service-level detail matters more than the average. Supply Chain Dive's report on the FedEx increase cites an analysis by the shipping software firm Loop. It found that five of FedEx's seven major services rise more than 5.9%.
The services below show the spread, according to that Loop analysis.
- FedEx 2Day A.M.: about 6.65%
- FedEx Ground, 1 to 5 pounds: about 6.49%
- First Overnight: about 6.01%
- Standard Overnight: about 5.16%
- Express Saver: about 3.09%
The 1-to-5-pound bracket is the one to watch. Most apparel, beauty, supplement and accessory orders land there. Heavier brackets rise less, so the average is pulled down by parcels that small shops rarely send.
UPS had not announced its own 2027 increase when FedEx published. In past years it has followed within weeks with a similar figure, so plan as if both carriers move together.
The Surcharges That Move More Than the Base Rate
Surcharges are where a parcel's cost quietly grows. The base rate gets the headline, but a residential parcel to a rural address can carry two or three extra fees. Each of those fees rises on January 4 as well.
The table below lists the FedEx surcharges most small shippers pay, with 2026 and 2027 amounts.
| Surcharge | 2026 | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential delivery | $6.95 | $7.35 | +5.8% |
| Delivery area, residential | $6.60 | $7.00 | +6.1% |
| Delivery area, commercial | $4.45 | $4.70 | +5.6% |
| Additional handling, weight | $46.00 | $49.50 | +7.6% |
| Oversize, Home Delivery zones 3-4 | $275 | $290 | +5.5% |
Many small shippers already have a negotiated discount on the residential fee. Others pay it at full list without knowing it can be negotiated. Check your last invoice and see which group you are in.
The paper fees are new. From January 18, FedEx adds $5 to domestic and export shipments created with a manual paper airbill. A $25 fee applies when a trade document for an international parcel arrives on paper. If your back office still runs on handwritten forms, this is a good moment to finish the switch. The same logic applies to replacing paper checks with digital payment tools.
Fuel Surcharges Will Do as Much Damage as the Rate Increase
Fuel is the line most owners forget to budget for. FedEx resets its fuel surcharge every week based on the national diesel price. When diesel climbs, the percentage added to every parcel climbs with it.
Diesel is expensive right now. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly diesel price update put the national average at $6.179 a gallon as of October 12, 2026. That is $2.51 higher than a year earlier.
The rate increase gets the attention, but the EIA figure is the bigger swing. A 5.9% rate change is fixed for the year. A fuel surcharge tied to diesel can move several points in either direction within a quarter. We suggest budgeting with the current fuel percentage, then checking the EIA number monthly so a spike doesn't surprise you.
A Worked Example: One Online Shop's 2027 Shipping Bill
Numbers make the increase concrete. Take a hypothetical online shop sending 1,200 FedEx Ground residential parcels a month. Each weighs about 3 pounds and costs $11.50 before surcharges.
Here is how the 2027 changes add up for that shop, line by line.
- Base rate: $11.50 rises about 6.49%, adding roughly $0.75 per parcel.
- Residential surcharge: rises $0.40 per parcel at list.
- Total: about $1.15 more per parcel, before fuel.
- Monthly: 1,200 parcels times $1.15 is about $1,380.
- Yearly: about $16,560 more, with fuel percentages still applied on top.
That shop's parcels end up roughly 7% to 8% more expensive, not 5.9%. For a business with a 10% net margin, that is real money. At Emazoo, we see the same pattern every January: the stores that check their own mix first are the ones that don't get caught out.
Five Moves to Make Before January 4
You have about eleven weeks before the new rates apply. That is enough time to make several changes that cut the impact, if you start now.
These steps are listed in the order we would tackle them.
- Pull 90 days of invoices and sort parcels by weight, zone and surcharge.
- Compare Express Saver against 2Day for anything not truly urgent, since it rises only about 3%.
- Re-quote light parcels with the Postal Service, whose holiday surcharges end January 17.
- Ask your FedEx rep for a better residential surcharge discount, using a competing quote.
- Update your checkout shipping prices and free-shipping threshold for January.
The Postal Service comparison deserves care. Its temporary holiday price change adds 40 to 55 cents to commercial Ground Advantage parcels under 3 pounds through January 17, 2027. We broke those down in our guide to USPS holiday surcharges for 2026. Compare FedEx against the Postal Service's January rates, not its holiday ones.
Should You Switch Carriers Because of the 2027 FedEx Rates?
Usually not outright. A full switch costs time, new integrations and staff retraining, and UPS tends to raise rates by a similar amount. A better move is splitting volume: keep FedEx for heavier or faster parcels, and send light, non-urgent parcels with whichever carrier quotes lowest for that weight and zone.
Splitting works because each carrier is strong in different brackets. The Postal Service is often cheapest for parcels under a pound or two. FedEx and UPS often win on heavier boxes and business addresses, where no residential fee applies. Regional carriers can beat all three within a few hundred miles of your warehouse.
There are real costs to running two carriers, though. You need shipping software that can rate-shop at the label, and your team needs two pickup routines. Two invoices also mean twice the checking for billing errors.
A rough rule helps here. Splitting tends to pay off above about 500 parcels a month, when even a dollar saved on a third of your volume covers the software. Below that, a better discount from one carrier is usually worth more than the effort of managing two.
Returns belong in the same review. A prepaid return label is still a parcel, and it carries the same new base rate and surcharges. If your return rate runs at 15% or 20%, the increase hits you on the way back as well as the way out. Many shops now charge a small return fee or offer store credit to offset that.
Don't Let Carrier Changes Break Your Delivery Promises
Switching carriers or services to save money can slow delivery. That has legal weight as well as customer-service weight. Your website's shipping promise is a commitment.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule says you need a reasonable basis for any shipping time you advertise. With no stated time, you must expect to ship within 30 days. If you can't, the FTC rule requires you to offer the buyer a delay or a full refund.
Slower, cheaper services also tend to produce more "where is my order" messages and more unhappy reviews. Handle those reviews honestly. Our breakdown of the FTC consumer review rule covers what sellers can no longer do.
The Bottom Line on FedEx Rates for 2027
The FedEx 2027 rate increase is 5.9% on paper and closer to 7% or 8% for a typical light residential parcel. Add a fuel surcharge riding on $6 diesel, and January's shipping bill will be noticeably higher.
Your next step is the invoice pull. Emazoo covers the shipping and logistics costs that small companies actually pay, and that 90-day review shows exactly where your money goes. With it in hand, you can negotiate, switch services or reprice checkout before the new rates land.
